Oh, the beauty of cinema!

A great movie never fails to make the perfect use of visuals to tell a great story. While cinematography, directions and acting are the most talked-about aspect of movies, what many people often fail to appreciate are the amazing interiors in some of these films.

Interior design can have a significant impact on human psychology and evoking important and apt feelings in us. The movies in this list have used this fact to their use in telling a compelling story and making us feel it deeply.

So if you ever feel like you are running out of ideas, here is the list of movies with interiors so stunning that they will instantly get your creative juices flowing!

1 - The Great Gatsby (2013)

The Great Gatsby

The lavish interiors in The Great Gatsby scream money and are an epitome of maximalism at its best.

The Art Deco style adopted by the set decorator Catherine Martin exhibits the essence of the roaring 1920s quite perfectly. This was a period when Art Deco, known for its exuberant and luxurious style, was being adopted all across Western Europe and the United States.

Although, of course, you might not wanna bring Art Deco to the modern interiors, you can sure use some of those decors to bring in a subtle magnificence.

2 - A Single Man (2009)

2 - A Single Man (2009)

A Single Man, directed by Tom Ford is a beautiful story that deals with death and loss, something expressed well through the architecture and interiors of the protagonist’s house.

A significant part of the movie was shot in the house designed by famed architect John Lautner.

A few changes in the interior gave a whole new dimension to the story with its subtlety.

If interiors of The Great Gatsby exhibited luxury and vibrance, the austere and monochromatic interiors of A Single Man communicate peaceful relaxation and openness through its beige décor and wood tones.

3 - Call Me By Your Name

3 - Call Me By Your Name

Talk about beautiful films and this movie comes up. Call Me By Your Name is one of the most outstanding coming-of-age dramas to watch not only if you want to experience some really great cinema but also to see some real good Italian style interior.

The set of the country estate Villa Albergoni was designed by none other than Violante Visconti di Modrone who made sure that the villa seemed to have a warm, loving history of its own.

Giving it a homely feeling, the house has been decorated with maps, old globes, beautiful books, old chairs, vintage rugs and engravings from a print shop in Verona. The interiors, which Violante has designed, were inspired by her own home, with a mix of Asian artefacts to give it a well-lived feel.

4 - American Psycho (2000)

4 - American Psycho (2000)

Patrick Bateman was as crazy as they come and a little bit more but you’ve got to say the man had some taste for standard interiors.

The minimalism which is driving the whole interior design industry today with such force has been totally nailed in the slick, cold style in the movie.

Patrick Bateman

From the pristine white sofa to the prism coffee table, a kind of chill and clean style is palpable in Patrick Bateman’s apartment. Even the paintings that have been used are completely in harmony with everything else.

5 - The Grand Budapest Hotel (2014)

5 - The Grand Budapest Hotel (2014)

Not just a section, this one deserves a whole article written on it, that’s how amazing the interiors in this movie are!

Wes Anderson - say the name and half the world already knows the kind of style we are talking about. His name has been associated with vibrant, sophisticated and unique interiors that can be seen in all his movies.

5 - The Grand Budapest Hotel (2014)

The Grand Budapest Hotel is a personal favourite of most interior designers and has inspired many with its surreal designs. Let us say no more than this: you just have to watch this.

7 - Amelie (2001)

7- Amelie (2001)

Talk about made for each other - that’s the relationship between Amelie’s protagonist and the interiors of her house. Although the complete set in the movie was wonderfully pleasing, it’s the protagonist Amelie Poulain’s bedroom that truly catches the eye.

There’s only one word to describe the interiors of this much wanted and admired bedroom - eclectic, with that vibrant red colour which is instantly captivating.

The style throughout isn’t consistent, yet there’s a certain rhythm in the interiors of the whole house which is a delightful combination of traditional-gothic style with the use of antique décor.

The choice use of colours - dominantly yellow and red with splashes of mostly green and sometimes blue makes her home dreamy and outlandish in a desirable way.

8 - The Shining (1980)

8 - The Shining (1980)

Kubrick never disappoints as far as visuals, or cinema itself, are concerned. The Shining, known for its ahead-of-time content and many controversies, has a legacy that goes beyond the obvious.

The movie has beautifully explored the use of colours, patterns and designs to reflect the mental state of the characters and set a mood for the viewers.

The interiors in the movie are artistic, vibrant and - if you ignore the fact that it’s The Shining, a cult horror movie - quite homely. Patterns stand out the most in the movie - in the famous hexagon patterned carpet, its wallpapers, and of course, the bar.

9 - A Clockwork Orange (1971)

9- A Clockwork Orange (1971)

Here comes another Kubrick masterpiece. We aren’t doing this on purpose - the man just seems to have a taste for classNamey interiors!

This horror masterpiece isn’t really for everyone if you focus on the content of the movie but if you are looking forward to exploring some really unique design, then you can’t miss this.

The theme and style in the movie are provocative, retro, flashy and kind of a buzz. The buildings set in this dystopian world use a minimalistic style and yet manage to be provocative. Many furniture and decors inspired by the movie are today used in homes.

10 - Midsommar (2019)

10 - Midsommar (2019)

The movie itself is one of the most disturbing prophetical tales told in contemporary cinema but what has multiplied the effects of the horror in this movie has been its set.

The movie is a beautiful nightmare that has been decorated with summer flowers, tapestries, wall paintings and in general, its pristine aesthetics.

The film uses traditional Swedish artistry to depict a visual tale of horror that is to unfold in this beautiful village of Harga. Why are the visuals of this movie so important? Because unlike in other movies, they aren’t extravagantly loud, or obviously scary - in fact, quite the opposite. They are pristine, a dream to live in.

Although you would never wanna stay in the story of the film, the interiors can indeed bring to life a home that looks as peaceful as a sleeping baby.
